Western songs can be sentimental, but they tell their stories stoically: the love of a land, the remoteness of a mountain, determination on a dusty trail, loyalty toward a horse, the strength of prairie women. They evoke mythic tales of round-ups and rustlers and the legends of robbers and renegades. They look life straight in the eye and say:
"I'll take it as is, come what may."
 Pioneers, cattlemen, ranchers, gamblers, painted ladies and gunslingers all shared their songs with each other. They kept memories alive for family, friends and fans, bequeathing to posterity not just the history but also the feel of the Old West. That spirit lives on today in Western songs that retain a love of the land and its restless life, while keeping alive the promise of ever expanding horizons.
A lucky congregation of music lovers, history buffs and Western wannabes gathered in the grand lower foyer of the Autry National Center's museum building at Griffith Park for an evening of music, poetry, storytelling and film, headlined by popular singer/songwriter Michael Martin Murphey. Rachel Worby, artistic director of the event's producer, MUSE/IQUE, narrated the evening's musical encounters.
Now in the Western Music Hall of Fame, Murphey is a gifted composer and wordsmith with a pointed, twangy tenor that sings in tune even when his maverick guitar occasionally wanders off the trail. He opened and closed the evening with sing-alongs, kicking off the event with the unofficial anthem of the American West (and official song of Kansas) Home on the Range.
At home on any range (Murphey owns ranches in Wisconsin, Colorado, and Texas) he shared ranch lore in anecdote and song for the rest of the evening. (As a sign of the worldwide popularity of Home on the Range, this writer was once asked to come unprepared onto a stage in Japan and sing it for a Japanese audience just so they could hear it in "American.")

On Friday, May 20, 2012 Rusnak Audi Pasadena sponsored Locks of Love at Chateau Salon in Montrose, California. Friends and supporters of Chateau Salon came in to donate their pony tails to Locks of Love.
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children in the United States and Canada under age 21 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses we provide help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers.  Rusnak Auto Group and The Cheese Store of Pasadena hosted a VIP reception for Big WEEK Out, the 15th annual fundraiser for AIDS Service Center. The attendees were a mix of corporate sponsors, venue hosts, representatives from the AIDS Service Center as well as the owners of the Robinson House, Mark & Phaedra Ledbetter, who are hosting the Gala Kick Off Reception on Saturday, May 5th.
  Corporate sponsor representatives included Liz Rusnak Arizmendi from RUSNAK Auto Group, All Saints Church's Juliana Serano and Valerie Prince of Professional Business Bank. Venue hosts Rodney & Deborah Ross who will be hosting a party with artist Kenton Nelson were excited to meet some of the other hosts. Boyd Smith, one of the three Co-chairs of the event along with Mark Ogden & Sally Mann, was one of the creators of the event 15 years ago. Jane Winkler-Hermann & Ada Gates, also venue hosts shared stories of their past years of hosting parties for the event.

 On May 1st, nearly 350 people attended the 20th Annual Angel Gala to raise funds for the programs and services the Pasadena organization provides to cancer patients and their families. According to event chair LeAnn Healy, the evening netted over $150,000.
The Angel Award is the most prestigious award presented by Cancer Support Community and recognizes outstanding service among individuals, corporations, and the medical community in improving the lives of people facing cancer. The honorees were Alice and Loren Brodhead, Nestle USA and Brad Alford and Heinz-Josef Lenz, MD.

Vegas Pianos provided the evening's entertainment, playing popular songs and encouraging attendees to sing along and to request their favorite tunes. The live auction was a tremendous success and was highlighted by a helicopter ride with the Pasadena Police Department, a Terranea resort package coupled with a Rusnak Jaguar, a seven-night stay at a 5 bedroom Newport Beach home, as well as 4 bedroom penthouse in Hawaii.
Alice and Loren Brodhead began their affiliation with The Wellness Community in 1996 and have been loyal supporters of CSCP ever since. In 2003/2004 Loren served as President of the Board of Directors and has shared his wisdom and good judgment as he served on nearly every committee of the organization. He has even been a voluntary landscape artist as he singlehandedly planted the outdoor patio planters in 2007! Alice volunteered her service on the Angel Gala Committee for several years. Together, Alice and Loren have hosted many events in their lovely home to benefit Cancer Support Community in many different ways.
Heinz-Josef Lenz, MD is Professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine; Associate Director, Clinical Research; Chair, GI Oncology Program; Co-director, Colorectal Center at USC Norris Hospital. He has been a member of the CSCP Professional Advisory Board for a number of years and generously volunteers his time to present educational workshops at Cancer Support Community. Dr. Lenz is a nationally recognized oncologist with a unique ability to provide complex diagnosis and treatment information to people facing cancer in a manner that informs and strengthens their ability to make informed decisions about their medical care.

BIG NIGHT OUT has become one of the region's most enthusiastically anticipated events and ASC's premiere fund raiser. The concept is simple: 700 guests gather at a grand estate for a gala reception to kick off the weeks worth of events in honor of its 15 years. The kick off gala includes auctions, hors-d'oeuvres, and hosted bars. The silent auction this year will be focused on travel and fine dining. The live auction will be composed of 15 exclusive luxury items.

In addition, ASC reaches 4,000 community members annually with HIV prevention and education services. ASC also offers free and anonymous HIV testing.
